If your RV sits for months between trips, how you store the battery matters as much as how you use it. The wrong storage state can quietly age a cell or, worst case, kill it outright. Here's the off-season playbook for both chemistries.
The quick answer
LiFePO4: store at ~50% state of charge, disconnected, in a cool dry place above freezing if you can. AGM: store fully charged, disconnected, and top it up every 1–2 months because lead-acid self-discharges. In both cases, kill parasitic drains first. Storing a lithium (LiFePO4) battery
- Charge to ~50% SoC before storing — lithium ages slowest in this band. Not full, not empty.
- Disconnect it from the RV, or at least the main negative, so parasitic loads can't drain it.
- Keep it above freezing if possible. LiFePO4 won't charge below about 0°C, but storage itself is fine cold; a heated variant is ideal if your storage gets below freezing.
- Check every 1–2 months. A healthy lithium loses only a percent or two a month — if it's dropping fast, something is still drawing.

Storing an AGM (lead-acid) battery
- Store it fully charged. Unlike lithium, a full AGM is the safe resting state.
- Top it up every 1–2 months. AGM self-discharges and sulfates if left flat — that's permanent capacity loss.
- Keep it cool but not frozen. A discharged lead-acid can freeze and crack; a charged one tolerates cold far better.
