A 12V LiFePO4 battery is the default choice for a modern RV house bank. It's lighter than AGM, it actually delivers close to its rated amp-hours, and it shrugs off the partial-state-of-charge cycling that kills lead-acid. The hard part isn't "should I go lithium" — it's "which one." Here's how we'd pick.
Why LiFePO4 for an RV
- Usable capacity: you can regularly use 80–90% of a LiFePO4 bank vs ~50% of AGM, so a 100Ah lithium does the work of a 200Ah AGM.
- Weight: roughly a third of the weight of an equivalent lead-acid bank.
- Lifespan: 2,000–4,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, versus 300–500 for AGM.
- Charge speed: accepts a high charge current, so solar and alternator charging refill it fast.
One caveat: LiFePO4 needs a charger/profile that tops out around 14.4–14.6V and does not do a lead-acid equalization stage. See our LiFePO4 charging guide.
Picking the right capacity
Capacity is the single biggest decision. A quick rule of thumb:
- 100Ah: weekend trips, LED lights, phone/laptop, a small fridge. One battery is enough for many weekend warriors.
- 200Ah: full-time weekend use, a 12V compressor fridge, occasional inverter loads.
- 300–314Ah: boondocking multi-day, inverter microwave, coffee maker, or running an A/C on battery.
- 400Ah+: residential fridge, lots of inverter cooking, or off-grid living.

Can I mix lithium brands in one bank?
It's best not to. Different BMS cutoff points and internal resistances mean cells won't balance. Keep one brand and model per parallel bank. If you're expanding, match capacity and batch.
Do I need a new charger for LiFePO4?
You need a charge profile that's lithium-aware (no equalization, ~14.4–14.6V absorption). Most modern RV converters and MPPTs support it; flip the dip switch or setting. Our charging guide walks through it.
Is Bluetooth worth it?
For most RVers, yes — it lets you see state of charge, current, and cell balance from your phone without opening a compartment. If you want a permanent dash readout instead, pair it with a battery monitor.
100Ah or 314Ah — which should I buy?
