Best RV Battery for Boondocking

Boondocking — dry camping with no shore power — strips your rig down to one question: how long can your batteries carry the load? There's no pedestal to lean on. The good news is that modern 12V LiFePO4 makes multi-day off-grid stays practical for almost any trailer or van, as long as you size the bank and the charging right.

Why boondocking is a battery problem

When you're hooked up, your converter does the work. Off-grid, every amp-hour is yours to manage. A typical boondocker runs a 12V fridge (~40Ah/day), lights and water pump (~15Ah), phone and laptop charging (~10Ah), and maybe a vent fan (~10Ah). That's roughly 75Ah of usable draw per day before you touch an inverter. AGM only gives you about half its label capacity without damage, so a "100Ah" AGM really means ~50Ah usable. LiFePO4 hands you 80–90% of its label, so a 100Ah lithium behaves like 200Ah of AGM for the same footprint.

How much capacity you need

Plan for at least two nights without sun. If you draw 75Ah/day, a 200Ah bank gives you ~2.5 days of comfortable margin; a 300–314Ah bank stretches that to 3–4 days and absorbs cloudy weather. Our rule of thumb:

  • Weekend boondocker: 200Ah LiFePO4 is plenty.
  • Multi-day / seasonal: 300–314Ah is the sweet spot.
  • Full off-grid or power-hungry rigs: 400Ah+ or two parallel banks.

Charging without hookups

A bigger bank only helps if you can refill it. Off-grid, you have three refuel sources:

  • Solar: a 400W rigid kit realistically returns 100–160Ah on a good sunny day — the backbone of boondocking.
  • Alternator (DC-DC): a 50A DC-DC charger adds 30–45Ah per hour of driving, so a travel day can top you off.
  • Generator (rarely needed): only if solar and driving both fall short.

Can I boondock on AGM?

Yes, but you'll need roughly double the label capacity versus lithium because you can only use about half of an AGM without shortening its life. A 200Ah LiFePO4 replaces a 400Ah AGM bank in the same space. See our lithium vs AGM breakdown.

How many solar watts do I need?

Do I need a DC-DC charger to boondock?

Not strictly — solar alone can work — but a DC-DC charger means a single travel day can refill your bank, which takes the pressure off cloudy stretches. It's the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for boondockers who drive between sites.
